A plural resolution logic

چکیده
This paper presents an integration of centering theory ([GJW95]) into incremental dynamic logic. The formalism is based on an idea found in [vE00a], where contexts are permutable in order to model salience. Building on this idea, centering theory is restated as a formalism on contexts. Subsequently the system is used to consider some problems centering theory has once plurality is taken into account. It is proposed that for the ordinary notions of centering to work, one has to think of agreement not only as an operation restricting the generation of resolutions, but also as an operation transforming the relevant (ordered) context.

Plural Logic and Sensitivity to Order
Sentences that exhibit sensitivity to order (e.g. John and Mary arrived at school in that order and Mary and John arrived at school in that order) present a challenge for the standard formulation of plural logic. In response, some authors have advocated new versions of plural logic based on fine-grained notions of plural reference, such as serial reference [Hewitt 2012] and articulated referenc...

Plural logic adds to singular logic plural variables and a two-place connective ‘is/are among’, written ‘ ́’. Superplural logic adds to plural logic higher-level variables and higher-level twoplace connectives ‘are among’, written ‘ ́n’. This thesis examines the linguistic, logical, and philosophical status of superplural logic. I begin by asking whether the idea of a superplural logic is intelli...
متن کاملTo Be is to Be the Object of a Possible Act of Choice
Aim of the paper is to revise Boolos’ reinterpretation of second-order monadic logic in terms of plural quantification ([4], [5]) and expand it to full second order logic. Introducing the idealization of plural acts of choice, performed by a suitable team of agents, we will develop a notion of plural reference. Plural quantification will be then explained in terms of plural reference. As an app...
متن کاملDonkey Pluralities: Plural Information States vs. Non-Atomic Individuals
The paper argues that two distinct and independent notions of plurality are involved in natural language anaphora and quantification: plural reference (the usual non-atomic individuals) and plural discourse reference, i.e. reference to a quantificational dependency between sets of objects (e.g. atomic / non-atomic individuals) that is established and subsequently elaborated upon in discourse. F...

where ‘aa’ is a plural term, and ‘F’ a plural predicate. Following George Boolos (1984) and others, many philosophers and logicians also think that plural expressions should be analysed as not introducing any new ontological commitments to some sort of ‘plural entities’, but rather as involving a new form of reference to objects to which we are already committed (for an overview and further det...
